An addition to Yards of Legacy after a long hiatus. Quite unreasonable of me to hold it back for years, but better late than never!
For this Yards of Legacy, Shruthi decided to add this pleasant pastel polysilk saree. It belongs to her paternal grandmother Saraswathi. This lavender weave is atleast 25 years old, bought from one of the stores in Puttur for around Rs.500.
Though it might not be an old traditional weave, Shruthi has a unique reason to select this one to represent the memory her grandmother. She says this saree is unlike any saris her granny wore. In Shruthi’s own words – “She actually loved shades of red, orange and brown and was always seen in those colors! I have no idea how she got a saree in this color combination, but it felt so unique and surprising that I was delighted to have it as a memory keepsake when she passed on. We did this shoot very close to her anniversary and it felt like a nice little nod to her personality – simple to understand in some ways and yet very complex , confusing and surprising in other ways.”
Shruthi’s styling of this saree is quite like her personality, she lost herself in imagining these beautiful pastels on the princesses from the independence era. It was around the same time when her granny would have been in her prime. So the pearl necklace and make up were inspired from that era but with her own twist.
We shot this in a few streets and alleys around Museum road and also the Hatworks Boulevard enclosure on Cunningham road. Which gave us the colonial vibe with the wooden door frames as you see in the first two pictures and below, and Indian touch with the colouful tiles. It sadden me though to say that in the past month, we have lost this beautiful nook on Cunningham, the building has been brought down. This space that used to house Fresco’s perhaps 2 decades ago, and in the recent years, renovated space of Hatworks Boulevard and Trippy goat is no longer around. So in way, these shots became as a timely ode to this charming space that can only be seen in pictures now.
